The sixteen lakes of the National Park of Plitvice Lakes, are connected by 92 waterfalls. The lakes themselves cover about 2 square kilometers, and the entire national park covers 200 square kilometers. Because of its peerless beauty and the abundance of animal and plant life, the area was designated a national park in 1949 and in 1979 UNESCO put the Plitvice Lakes on its list of world natural heritage.
The waterfalls of this unique natural phenomenon are not more than 4,000 years old. The Plitvice Lakes have attracted numerous tourists over the years, not only with their beauty but also with a number of events, such as the wedding ceremony which takes place under the waterfall.
